After a brief rise in the walks, home runs, and runs category rankings, the jolt the Royals got from the rookies being inserted in the lineup was offset by losing a struggling Salvador Perez to injury and other general ineptness, so the rise has plateaued the Royals offense to their usual “very bad, just not quite the worst” status.
Losers of 7 of their last 10 and owning the worst run differential in baseball, the Royals have been shutout 6 times in 52 games (shutout 9 times all of 2021) and have scored 2 runs or fewer in 17.
The four rookies in the lineup – Bobby Witt Jr., MJ Melendez, Kyle Isbel, Emmanuel Rivera – have accounted for just 35% of the plate appearances since May 23rd, but 60% of the Royals home runs and 45% of the RBI.
The record is now 17-35, 3 games behind the Detroit Tigers in last place of the AL Central.
